Reducing Fleet Insurance Costs
Whatever the size of your business’ fleet, it will need to be insured to be on the road. There will always be incentives to reduce the amount you have to pay for fleet insurance, and there are three practical primary ways to do so:
- Sending drivers and other operators on reputable courses where they can receive certification showing they are safer drivers
- Installation of safety devices
- Installation of monitoring equipment which can demonstrate that the fleet drivers are not responsible for any incidents which take place

Installation of Safety Devices
Reducing the vulnerability of your fleet’s vehicles to different risks will lead to lower insurance premiums. It should also lead to fewer claims against your insurance, which will reduce overall costs both now and into the future.
Perhaps the most important category to review, especially if your work vehicles are HGVs, is braking systems.
The longer it takes for your vehicle to be brought to a halt, the more distance it will travel beforehand. If there is another vehicle, a physical obstacle, or especially a vulnerable road user like a pedestrian in your vehicle’s path, cutting your stopping distance can prevent or minimise impacts. Collision warning and avoidance systems like the Banksman Auto Braking radar system and VT Sensorvision Drive are incredibly valuable here. These systems give the driver a fuller picture of their surroundings, providing key information quickly and increasing the potential reaction time for any hazard. While systems like these are most valuable for larger vehicles, especially as these tend to have the biggest blind spots, they will benefit any driver in any road vehicle.

Vehicle Monitoring and Insurance
When you can prove that your fleet and your drivers are not at fault, it falls to the other drivers’ insurance to cover costs. As such, properly monitored vehicle fleets will see reduced insurance.
