Managing Occupational Road Risk
Any fleet manager knows that it’s not just about keeping the vehicles fuelled up, insured, and on the road; it’s also about making sure your team are ready to go, motivated, and have the skills they need for excellent execution of their roles. That’s true whether you deal with city buses, agricultural tractors and combine harvesters, or any other commercial vehicle.
However, some teams face an extra level of occupational road risk because they have to operate outside the vehicle on the road. Delivery drivers, highway repair teams, refuse collection teams, and more will all be on their feet in and around traffic from time to time. Unfortunately that much is inevitable, but there are things you can do to help reduce their risk and your exposure.

Most important for protecting the team operating your fleet is flagging to traffic that they’ll be present. The VT Lightboard can be programmed to warn approaching traffic that there may be people working in their blind spot, giving them a reason to drive more carefully than they otherwise might.

While the vehicle is stationary it can be used to warn traffic that your team may be present in the area, while also giving your team a good sense of how far from the vehicle they can afford to stay.
Introducing the VT LoadSafe Intelligent Control System
Specifically designed for refuse vehicles, our newest product, the VT LoadSafe, is designed to protect loaders working with rear bin lifters. The LoadSafe uses AI video analysis software to continuously monitor for the presence of people within the bin lifter’s safety zone (an area that can be reconfigured for different vehicles).
If a person is detected too close to the system, the bin lifter will not operate, while a flashing amber light confirms to the loader that they need to step out of range. The LoadSafe can help workers stay safe while also allowing for more efficient loading, and it’s reliable even in harsh environments.
Monitoring for Safety
The LoadSafe is also compatible with the VT Connect system, meaning you’ll have a full record of any lift inhibitions and will be able to identify crews that may need more safety training to stay at an appropriate distance, as well as any locations on your routes that may be more difficult for your teams. These can then be directly assessed and any steps available to you can be taken.
It can be an unpleasant topic for discussion, but while out of a vehicle your crew may also face the displeasure of the public, and there are times when this can escalate. For circumstances like these, the VT Bodycam both provides a record of every incident and can even act as a deterrent, de-escalating unnecessary aggression immediately.
