TfL Video Highlights Danger Of Misjudging Your Blind Spot

Posted on 29th Mar, 2014 by Jonathan Peach

A new video released by Transport for London (TfL) has shown exactly how easily a cyclist, or even a group of cyclists can appear invisible in the side mirror.

Spotting cyclists is a major concern for all drivers but especially those behind the wheel of HGVs and haulage vehicles. The results of not spotting a cyclist before a manoeuvre can be fatal, and it now seems that staying vigilant may be more difficult than first thought.

Cyclists are warned not to cycle up along the inside of HGVs but this doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. It does, and it is a driver’s responsibility to remain vigilant of all hidden dangers.

As the TfL video shows, something as simple as the positioning of blind spot hazards can render them almost invisible. This is another risk factor for HGV drivers turning at junctions, as cyclists may pull up alongside at the last minute, after the driver’s preliminary checks.

Cycling Casualty Statistics: a Sobering Reality

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) releases a full annual report into the number of cycling casualties on Britain’s roads. Their latest data shows that, in 2012, over 19,000 cyclists were injured on the road, with over 3,000 of that number either seriously injured or killed.

Of all these accidents, a staggering 75% occur at or near road junctions, which highlights the need for increased vigilance, particularly by drivers of heavy goods vehicles. The RoSPA reports that ‘about one quarter’ of accidents which resulted in serious injuries to a cyclist were due to a heavy good vehicle, coach or bus ‘passing too close’ to the rider.

VT TurnSafe™: Vehicle Reversing Cameras with 360º Vision

Protecting cyclists and allowing them to ride comfortably is big news after a winter of increased cyclist fatalities on our roads. It is more important than ever, therefore, for owners of commercial fleets, and their drivers, to ensure that the correct safety measures are in place.

Reversing cameras are designed to ensure the driver has a clearer view of all around them.  VT Overview™ is a reversing camera system that not only allows drivers to see what’s going on behind the vehicle, but that promises 100% clear vision around the whole vehicle – including in those blind spots.

This innovative vehicle safety system makes safely manoeuvring a heavy goods vehicle much easier. Comprising four high quality cameras, the system offers drivers complete 360º vision, bringing cyclists and other hazards into plain sight, no matter where they’re positioned.

VT Overview™ not only allows drivers to spot dangers via the in-cab display; its intuitive alarm pre-warns of cars, cyclists or pedestrians entering the blind spots on either side of the vehicle. The alarm also alerts the other road user to the vehicle’s impending manoeuvre, enabling them to stop or take evasive action if necessary.
