Two companies that flouted London’s Safer Lorry Scheme (SLS) by using unsafe vehicles have been prosecuted and fined. The vehicles, which were not fitted with the proper safety equipment mandated by the 2015 scheme, are proof that the SLS is being taken extremely seriously by road transport officials. Moreover, the case highlights the ever-growing importance of cyclist safety technology.

Statistics made available for previous years make alarming reading. In a recent report, statistics for 2014 revealed that there were 1,658 people killed, 20,676 seriously injured and 123,988 slightly injured in accidents that involved vehicles on the road.

One in ten vehicles on our motorways is a heavy goods vehicle (HGV). However, despite the low ratio of HGVs to other types of vehicle, they’re involved in half of all fatal accidents. A large majority of accidents result from failure to brake, so anything that helps a lorry stop more quickly – such as AEBS technology will be a vital addition to vehicle technology.
