Collisions between cyclists and lorries are all too frequent on Britain’s roads, contributing to more than their fair share of accident statistics. Serious injury and even fatalities are not uncommon, which is why Barclays have created a Cycle Safety Action plan to help cyclists stay safe on the roads.

Safer Lorries Scheme

HGVs and lorries are currently involved in more than their fair share of accidents. Large vehicles are tricky to manoeuvre and even experienced drivers have difficulty maintaining a broad field of awareness at all times. In 2013, lorries were involved in 9 out of 14 incidents leading to cyclist fatalities according to Citizen Space.

Action to stop killing cyclists

Injuries resulting from incidents between cyclists and vehicles on Britain’s roads continue to rise. While there’s been a fall in fatalities (which could just be the result of the UK’s ever improving healthcare system and hospitals), there have been increases in serious injuries. In 2013, serious injuries were 31% higher than the average over 2005 – 2009, despite actions to try and raise the awareness of safety on today’s roads.
