Earlier this week we launched StopSafe, our latest auto breaking technology. After the events of December 2015, among other countless incidents where vehicles have rolled away after a driver has passed out or collapsed, the introduction of AEBS technology into local council and authorities has become key. It’s not just the road safety experts recommending this technology though; police officials and major vehicle manufacturers are touting the benefits too.
Why is AEBS important?
AEBS is an extremely powerful technology that has the potential to prevent a huge number of serious accidents.
Gerry Keaney, chief executive of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) recently said that:
“It is now time for the Government to take a lead by mandating the use of AEB-equipped cars across its own fleet and promoting wider uptake through the use of tax and other incentives.”
Research is consistently showing that AEBS are preventing crashes, and even when they’re not preventing crashes, they are reducing their severity. Of course, this has a multitude of other positive effects and benefits, including:
- Protecting vehicles from sustaining damage if they’re unable to stop
- Protecting other road users and pedestrians
- Ensuring all vehicles operating in populated areas are as safe as possible
- Installing confidence in drivers and operators
AEBS also can apply a vehicle’s brakes when the driver isn’t doing anything to prevent a collision, alongside amplifying the vehicle’s brakes if the driver isn’t braking sufficiently.
Considering the wide range of benefits AEBS brings to the modern day vehicle, autonomous driving and safety technologies are being described as having one of the most positive impacts on the fleet industry. In fact, Andrew Miller, chief technical officer at Thatcham Research, said that those that are choosing AEB for their fleet are beginning to see benefits already.
What are the consequences of braking incidents?
Even in the hands of the most experienced drivers, a waste management vehicle can be extremely dangerous. Although they only average between 35-45mph when operating on roads, the vehicle could still reach enough speed to cause serious injuries or fatalities if left uncontrolled.
It’s not just the bigger vehicles that have the potential to cause serious harm though, even regular cars fall victim to braking-related incidents.
