What are the dangers when reversing?

What are the dangers when reversing

Posted on 11th Apr, 2016 by Jonathan Peach

Did you know that nearly 25% of all deaths involving vehicles at work occur as a result of a reversing? What’s more, in scenarios where other individuals aren’t involved, serious damage can occur to the vehicle and property that’s been reversed into – causing yet another headache for fleets and businesses.

Further research from the HSE also shows that reversing accidents lead to between 10-20 deaths per year. As vehicle direction is not always recorded, and not all accidents are investigated, there is a real chance that this number is an underestimate too.

What to look out for

The main problem when reversing is poor visibility, especially in larger vehicles. For example, a lorry’s trailer can often obscure visibility when a lorry reverses into a loading bay. Other factors, such as badly positioned mirrors or distractions from noise or activity in the landscape can also result in accidents occurring.

What are the dangers when reversing

To prevent accidents from occurring, drivers need to be aware of all dangers including:

  • Site layout
  • Blind spots
  • Pedestrians and other vehicles
  • Lack of space
  • Lack of lighting
  • Faulty safety equipment

Following this, a driver needs to apply a range of appropriate management techniques, through analysis and review, take into consideration the site, its restrictions, and how best to manage it, and finally, take advantage of any vehicle-based interventions – such as reversing cameras and alarms. It’s also of upmost importance that a driver is fully trained and competent too.
