Last week we revealed our latest cyclist safety product in development, VT TurnSign – our new prototype illuminated rear safety sign.
Making Britain’s roads safer
Between 2008 and 2012, 53 per cent of cyclist fatalities in London involved a heavy goods vehicle, the majority of which were construction vehicles. As a result, Transport for London commissioned an independent review of the construction sector’s transport activities in 2012 to help them to understand the causes of these collisions and how they might be prevented. This report was named Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety- otherwise known as CLOCS.
After this, in 2013, the Safer Lorries scheme was also implemented. This scheme was introduced by Transport for London and London Councils who proposed to prohibit HGVs over 3.5 tonnes that were not fitted with the required safety equipment (Side Guards, Class V mirrors and Class VI mirrors) from driving in London.
With these initiatives in place and CLOCS remaining an active community committed to make change, we decided to do our bit to help. The result? An exciting suite of safety products to address the problem.
What is TurnSign?
The TurnSign is a rear-installed LED warning light, around 30cm in length, designed specifically for waste vehicles, but suitable for any large vehicle. The high intensity LED can be installed to flash when the driver indicates or it can be set to flash all the time.
The new product has been developed by us in-house and as a standard says ‘’CYCLISTS – WARNING’, but the bespoke nature of the product means we can tailor it to say anything you want – should you think of anything else more appropriate.
As with all the Vision Techniques products, TurnSign is hard wearing, durable and complementary to the rest of our safety range. The metal frame of the LED light itself is IP69 water and dust proof and the system works as part of the VT TurnSafe range. It has been modularly developed to combine with VT proximity sensors, side alarm awareness or blind spot camera for full coverage and ultimate vehicle safety.
