Working in the waste and recycling industry is highly dangerous – and vehicle safety extremely important.
The government report, Mapping Health and Safety Standards in the UK Waste Industry, showed that deaths and accidents in the waste industry were more than ten times the national average.
The incidents, the report found, predominantly happen to refuse collection workers who manually handle the waste.
One of the main problems it highlighted was vehicles reversing.
There are hundreds of safety issues. Workers can be dragged into, or fall into, the bin wagon and reversing accidents are easy because of the size of the vehicle.
It important that waste disposals vehicles are fitted with the proper vehicle safety equipment, such as reversing cameras.
