Should AEBS technology be fitted as a standard to vehicles?

AEBS is still one of the hot road safety topics of the moment. Having proved its worth, more and more companies are investing in AEBS technology – which begs the question, should it now be fitted as a standard?

Following on from EU regulations, which came into force at the end of last year, AEB systems were fitted on virtually all new trucks, buses, and coaches over 8 tonnes. However, a huge segment of the vehicle industry was still left out – despite the known benefits. What’s more, as the majority of the vehicles on Britain’s roads aren’t new, should there be a regulation put in place to fit AEBS technology in those vehicles too?

The benefits of AEBS technology

Euro NCAP and ANCAP, the safety bodies for Europe and Australasia, have been carrying out intensive research on AEBS for a while now. Their research has confirmed that AEBS is effective in reducing accidents. The safety bodies found that that Low Speed AEBS technology, in particular, has led to a 38% reduction in real-world rear end crashes.

While there are no plans to fit new vans and other LGVs with AEBS technology, it’s still advisable to update your current vehicle with technology that can be integrated into your vehicle. This applies to older freight, bus, and coach vehicles too, which aren’t affected by the new regulations either.

AEBS solutions for your vehicle

At Vision Techniques, we offer a range of AEBS technologies to reduce your risk of accidents and guarantee peace of mind.

VT StopSafe, the newest of our technologies, applies ABS braking at a touch of the button – stopping your vehicle when necessary. This prevents ‘out of control’ vehicles from causing injury on the roads and protects a driver’s life too.

How does it work?

Once the button inside your vehicle is pressed, your vehicle’s speed will quickly reduce and come to a controlled, safe stop. Lives can be saved at just a press of a button!

To ensure the design was appropriate for real-life drivers, we got the input of Craven Council too. With their real-life stories, tips, and advice, we were able to create a solution that worked and was extremely practical too.

What’s more, StopSafe is compatible with just about any vehicle. Old or new, the technology can be fitted with ease. You can even combine the technology with our other popular failsafe systems, VT BrakeSafe. Designed to prevent runaway accidents, VT Brakesafe applies the handbrake instantly, should a driver forget and leave their cab, even with the ignition off!
