Keeping safe and secure in the freight industry

HGV’s, like those in the freight industry, are well know for carrying risks. In 2013, the Department for Transport highlighted that there were 6,092 accidents involving HGVs reported to the police, with 8,448 causalities.

The need to reduce accidents in the freight industry is at an all time high. While there are ways you can help yourself, by practising proper road safety; products designed specifically with HGV safety in mind add that extra layer of safety and security.

Communicate with other road users

Always use signals to let other roads users know what you’re doing and recognise signals from others user the road – such as cyclists and horse riders.

Use your indicators in good time to warn other road users and make sure your indicators are cancelled as soon as possible after you’ve turned.

Only use your horn when necessary

Your horn should only be used when your vehicle is moving and you need to warn users of your presence.

Cooperate with other road users

Freight vehicles can be intimidating so make sure your cooperate with other road users to help keep traffic flowing and to avoid incidents. Keep a good eye out for cyclists, motorcyclists, children and the elderly.

Keep good separation distances

Allow good space between your vehicle and the one in front. Always consider the speed at which you’re travelling, the road, weather conditions and the weight of your vehicle.
