Implementing AEBS technology in the agricultural industry

Accidents, which involve moving vehicles in the agricultural and farming industry, account for almost a quarter of the deaths in the industry – and even more fatalities. The HSE estimates that there could be as many as 10,000 unreported injuries in the industry each year.

Each one involving costs to the injured person and to the business. While there are many causes behind accidents in agricultural and farming, braking is one of the dangers causing serious risk. But with safety measures including AEBS technology, VT BrakeSafe, and VT StopSafe, drivers can help to make the farming industry a safer place.

What are the dangers?

A huge number of accidents happen when a driver leaves a vehicle in a position to move – perhaps they haven’t put the handbrake on, haven’t put the gear in neutral, or haven’t turned the engine off. Without following this procedure the risk of accidents happening is real – as a tractor rolls away and potentially runs over or hits something. In fact, between 2013-2014 agricultural vehicles were one of the biggest risk factors on the farm. A HSE report revealed that 10% of all agricultural accidents during this time were a result of being struck by objects.

How AEBS and safety technology can help

Fitting AEBS on agricultural vehicles, like tractors, will mean the brakes automatically apply when the vehicle senses that it’s closing in on an object in its path. Modern technology can assess whether the object in front is moving or stationary – and consequently whether it’s a risk.

There are also a number of technologies, ideal for agricultural vehicles, which work with, or can complement AEBS technology. VT BrakeSafe is just one of these, applying the handbrake when a driver forgets. The technology prevents vehicle rollaway – even with the ignition off. A handy alarm also flags up the problem – ensuring the driver can correct any behaviour before it causes harm.

Vision Techniques have also developed another new product, which would also complement vehicles in the agricultural industry. VT StopSafe is the perfect companion to BrakeSafe and brings your vehicle to a controlled stop when the emergency button is pressed. This is ideal for a number of scenarios – including out of control vehicles and in health emergencies.
