Providing solutions to prevent dangerous driving
On the 28th January, the BBC released a video of a dangerous lorry driver who hit an RAC roadside mechanic and broke the mechanic’s back in two places. Having now been caught and imprisoned, the video shows Terence Poolman, 69, swerving across a motorway right through to the hard shoulder. Here, he ploughed into the RAC mechanic who was busy working on a broken down vehicle.
The accident was said to have taken place due to Poolman’s complete lack of attention. At a busier time in the day, the accident could have been a lot worse, causing fatalities and a pile up on one of Britain’s motorways.
If you too find yourself driving a HGV for long periods on time, there are some simple guidelines it may help to follow:
- Check your vehicle is safe to drive in
- Don’t tailgate – maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you
- Stay alert – tiredness is one of the biggest killers. Take a break whenever you need one and think about investing in useful Vision Techniques technology to make the job of driving your vehicle both easier and safer
- Secure your load safely
- Avoid sideswiping – always show your intention to other motorists and check that a lane is empty before changing.
A new product from Vision Techniques
One of our newest products, currently being developed by the R&D team, would have prevented an accident like the one described above from happening. The new product has been designed to read the road and warn the driver if they are too close to a vehicle. When fit into a lorry, the system has the power to recognise cars or other vehicles in front of the lorry, or across the way from a lorry for when a driver intends to change lanes.
More details will be released on our new product later this year.
