This month we attended a cyclist safety event with FORS at Transport for London to tackle the growing issue of cyclist safety and how vehicle technology can help provide solutions.
The event was targeted at raising safety awareness with pedestrians and cyclists, and FORS released accident statistics gathered from 2012.
The amount of fatalities on the roads involving cyclists and motorcyclists has grown dramatically in the past few years. Notably 21% of accidents involving cyclists took place in London, demonstrating the overwhelming growth of cyclists in the capital.
There were 14 fatalities involving cyclists in 2012, and 9 of those came from large vehicles turning left. This number is expected in rise with last years spike in accidents involving larger vehicles in autumn.
The meeting, attended by safety developers from around the country addressed the need for new technology and integration to help solve the problem of this growing issue.
Growing issues for larger vehicle drivers in London such as driver distraction, blind spots and driver confidence all led to discussions on how we can evaluate our technology.
Vision Techniques is working with FORS to address this growing issue by offering TurnSafe, our cyclist detection system to fleet operators, improving the awareness of cyclists and drivers on the road and detection dangers in busy city centres.
