Audible reversing sensors

Reversing sensors that use audible feedback usually use a beep or tones. The beeps become faster the closer the obstruction is to the vehicle.

If the vehicle is extremely close, a continuous tone can be heard, warning the driver to take action.

Visual reversing sensors

In addition to audible reversing sensors, a proximity sensor can also use visual aids. This may include an LCD readout, for example, to let a driver know the distance of an potentially obstructive object.

The proximity of the object will be indicated via the location and strength symbols of the screen.

Disadvantages – reasons to use them with other reversing aids

Reversing sensors may not detect small, thin items – because they may not be large enough to reflect sound waves. For example a narrow pole pointed at a vehicle will be difficult to pick up.

Objects that have flat surfaces and angled vertically, such as skips, can deflect the returned sound waves away from the reversing sensors and, therefore, they will not be detected. It is a good idea to supplement them with other reversing aids, such as reversing cameras.

Other reversing aids might include an auto braking system or mobile CCTV system.
